For the last several years, as the first quarter begins, we have been told that “This is the year of Mobile search!” While mobile search numbers have been on the rise, we have yet to see the explosion that many have predicted. As we move through 2011, these same claims are once again prevalent; however 2011 looks as if it may truly be the year of mobile search.
The driving force behind the rising numbers of mobile searches is the increasing amount of people now using smartphones.
Without a smartphone, using the internet on a mobile device can be a headache inducing affair, but for as little as $50 one can now be equipped with a smartphone that easily surfs the web. According to Nielsen research, by the 3rd quarter of 2011 smartphone sales will surpass the sales of feature type phones. A recent Performics study suggests that by the end of 2011 over 16% of all Google clicks will come from Mobile users.
With more people than ever accessing the internet from hand held devices, 2011 will surely see an explosion in mobile advertising methods. If mobile marketing has not been a part of your overall strategy, now is the time to make it a priority. Just like any other arena of marketing, your mobile web strategy will be unique to your business. Whether it is simply optimizing your site for mobile search, creating a custom mobile application for your business or getting listed on a mobile social media site like Foursquare, mobile search optimization is essential.
